God, Discipline, And Us.

1. God Disciplines His Children (Correction, Not Condemnation)

📖 Hebrews 12:5-6 – “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when he rebukes you; for whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.”

  • This verse shows that God disciplines His people when they stray, not to destroy them but to correct them.

  • A loving father corrects his children, and God does the same to those who belong to Him.

📖 Revelation 3:19 – “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore, be zealous and repent.”

2. Direct Judgment for Sin (Personal & National)

📖 Deuteronomy 28:15-22 – “But it shall come to pass if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country… The Lord will send on you cursing, confusion, and rebuke in all that you set your hand to do until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly because of the wickedness of your doings in which you have forsaken Me.”

  • This is a direct warning from God to Israel that disobedience would lead to suffering.

  • While this passage speaks to the nation of Israel, the principle remains: God allows consequences for sin.

📖 Psalm 107:17-18 – “Fools, because of their transgression and iniquities, were afflicted. Their soul abhorred all manner of food, and they drew near to the gates of death.”

  • Sin leads to affliction. Not all suffering is a result of personal sin, but some is.

3. God Sometimes Causes Suffering as Judgment

📖 Numbers 12:9-10 – “So the anger of the Lord was aroused against them, and He departed. And when the cloud departed above the tabernacle, Miriam suddenly became leprous, as white as snow.”

  • Miriam spoke against Moses, and God struck her with leprosy as judgment.

📖 Acts 5:1-11 – Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit and immediately fell dead.

  • This is a New Testament example of God bringing swift judgment on sin.

📖 1 Corinthians 11:29-30 – “For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this reason, many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep (have died).”

  • Paul explains that some Christians became sick and even died because they took Communion in an unworthy way.

4. Sin Brings Its Own Consequences

📖 Proverbs 13:15 – “The way of the transgressor is hard.”

  • Sin naturally leads to suffering. Many of our struggles come not because God actively punishes us but because we reap what we sow.

📖 Galatians 6:7-8 – “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.”

  • If we live in sin, destruction follows.

Conclusion: Does God Cause Bad Things to Happen Because of Sin?

Yes, in some cases, God directly brings judgment, correction, or discipline.

Yes, in many cases, sin brings its own consequences, and God allows suffering as a result.

But God’s ultimate goal is always redemption.

Lamentations 3:31-33 – “For the Lord will not cast off forever. Though He causes grief, yet He will show compassion according to the multitude of His mercies. For He does not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.”

🔥 God may allow suffering due to sin, but His heart always calls us to repentance, healing, and restoration.
