“Better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, For that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart.”
🗝️ Keyword Translation:
Mourning (Hebrew: 'ebel) – a time of grief, usually after death; also signifies humility and reflection.
Feasting (Hebrew: mishteh) – celebration, partying, enjoyment without restraint.
💡 Explanation:
This verse flips modern logic on its head. The world says, “Avoid pain, chase pleasure.” But Solomon, under divine inspiration, says the funeral home teaches more than the party hall.
Why? Because mourning sobers the heart, exposes the soul, and forces us to confront eternity.
The “house of mourning” resets the compass of the living—it calls us back to what matters. It isn’t about depression; it’s about divine perspective.
🧭 Application Nugget:
Don’t run from hard seasons. Don’t avoid hard questions. When you attend a funeral or face loss, ask the deeper question: “Am I living ready to meet my Maker?”
Better a moment of mourning with God than a lifetime of pleasure without Him.
