Biblical Thoughts On Abortion

The Bible does not explicitly mention abortion, but some passages are often referenced in discussions.

One commonly cited passage is Exodus 21:22-25, which states that if men are fighting and one of them accidentally injures a pregnant woman, causing her to give birth prematurely but without any serious harm, the man shall be fined. However, if serious injury is severe, the penalty will be "life for life."

Some interpret this passage to mean that the unborn child has value and should be protected. In contrast, others argue that it is unclear whether the course is referring to a miscarriage or premature birth and that it does not address intentional abortions.

Another passage often cited is Psalm 139:13-16, which says that God knit the psalmist together in his mother's womb and knew him before he was born. This passage is often used to argue that the unborn child has intrinsic value and worth.

Some passages speak more broadly about the sanctity of life and the value of human beings, such as Genesis 1:27, which says that God created humans in His image, and the Ten Commandments, which include the prohibition against murder. These passages are often cited in discussions about the morality of abortion.

It's worth noting that different Christian denominations and individual believers have different interpretations of these passages and views on the morality of abortion. For example, some Christians believe that abortion is always wrong. In contrast, others believe there may be circumstances in which it is justified, such as when the mother's life is in danger or when the pregnancy results from rape or incest.
