Today, let us discuss a topic that might seem uncomfortable – Spiritual Adultery. Yet, it is a topic that is essential to each of us, for it touches the core of our being – our relationship with our Creator. It is a concept that most of us might not be familiar with or not want to accept. However, it is one that we cannot pretend does not exist.
Spiritual Adultery occurs when we turn away from God and indulge in the things of this world. So it is when we prioritize our desires, ambitions, material wealth, fame, and success over our love, worship, and devotion to God. In other words, we commit Spiritual Adultery when we cheat on our relationship with God by chasing after worldly pleasures.
The Bible is replete with examples of Spiritual Adultery. Israel, God's chosen people, often committed this sin. They worshiped other gods, such as Baal and Ashtoreth, and indulged in immoral practices against God's laws. God often compared Israel's Spiritual Adultery to a wife who cheats on her husband.
Likewise, the New Testament speaks of Spiritual Adultery regarding the believer's relationship with Christ. James 4:4 says, "You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God."
Now, let us delve more deeply into the consequences of Spiritual Adultery. When we cheat on our relationship with God, we lose the blessings, protection, and guidance that He provides. God is a jealous God and, just like a partner in a committed relationship, He will not tolerate anyone or anything that comes between Him and us.
Moreover, when we turn away from God, we expose ourselves to the enemy's schemes. The devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). He will use every opportunity to lead us away from God and entangle us in sin.
In conclusion, dear friends, Spiritual Adultery is a severe sin we must guard against. So it is when we turn away from our relationship with God and indulge in the things of this world, forsaking our love, worship, and devotion to our Creator. Therefore, we must be vigilant and ask God to help us stay committed to Him, for He is the only one who can fill the longings of our hearts.
Let us pray.
Dear God, we come before you humbly and ask for your help in keeping us steadfast in our relationship with you. Forgive us for the times we have committed Spiritual Adultery, and help us to turn away from all that distracts us from you. Please give us the strength to resist the enemy's schemes and keep our hearts pure and focused on you. Amen.
