Sermon: When God's People Pray: Intervening Against Wickedness.

Key Text:

**2 Chronicles 7:14**

*"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and heal their land."*

Introduction:

Throughout history, God has demonstrated His willingness to intervene when His people unite in prayer and repentance. Whether it's delivering Israel from oppressive enemies or providing godly leadership during dark times, His faithfulness is unmatched. Today, America faces spiritual battles reminiscent of Biblical days, and we can learn from Scripture how persistent prayer can drive back wickedness and restore righteousness.

Biblical Examples of Intercessory Prayer:

1. **Abraham Interceding for Sodom (Genesis 18:22-33)**

Abraham prayed boldly for Sodom, asking God to spare the city if righteous people could be found. Despite the overwhelming wickedness, Abraham stood in the gap, showing that even a single person's prayer can appeal to God’s mercy.

**Application:** Like Abraham, we must pray persistently for our nation, pleading with God to save it for the sake of His faithful remnant.

2. **Moses Interceding for Israel (Exodus 32:9-14)**

When Israel sinned by worshiping the golden calf, God was ready to destroy them. Moses prayed fervently, reminding God of His covenant and appealing to His mercy. As a result, God relented.

**Illustration:** Imagine America standing at a similar crossroads. Suppose Christians across the nation unite in prayer, reminding God of His promises and interceding for mercy. Moses' example shows how such prayer can change the course of a nation.

3. **Esther and Mordecai (Esther 4:12-16)**

Faced with Haman's plot to annihilate the Jews, Esther called for fasting and prayer, risking her life to approach the king. Her boldness and the people's prayers brought deliverance to her nation.

**Application:** Esther’s story teaches us to combine prayer with action. We must pray and step into the positions God calls us to, trusting Him for the results.

America as an Illustration: God's Intervention in Government

In the early days of the American republic, leaders like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln frequently called the nation to prayer during times of crisis. History reveals that national repentance and prayer moments have often preceded great revivals and blessings.

**Modern Reflection:**

Imagine a nation where Christian leaders in government, education, and business boldly advocate truth and righteousness.

- Picture courts and legislatures reversing ungodly policies, protecting the unborn, defending religious freedom, and upholding justice.

- This vision is achievable only if God’s people commit to persistent prayer and engage in the work of ministry.

**Scriptural Principle:** Proverbs 21:1 reminds us, *"The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases."* God can move the hearts of leaders if His people pray.

How Should a Grateful Nation Respond?

1. **Acknowledge God’s Hand in Deliverance**

Just as Israel built altars of remembrance (Joshua 4:1-9), we should publicly acknowledge God’s intervention, giving Him the glory. A grateful nation must humble itself before the Lord.

**Example:** After the Revolutionary War, America’s leaders established days of thanksgiving to honor God’s deliverance.

2. **Commit to Ongoing Righteousness**

Isaiah 1:19-20 teaches that obedience leads to blessing, while rebellion invites judgment. We must remain vigilant in pursuing righteousness to maintain God’s favor.

3. **Engage in the Ministry of Reconciliation**

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 calls Christians to be ambassadors of reconciliation. A grateful nation should see a surge of evangelism, charity, and service to the hurting as an expression of gratitude.

Illustration: Turning the Tide in America

Imagine America like a ship caught in a violent storm, its rudder broken and drifting toward destruction. Godly leaders rise, praying fervently and steering the nation toward safety. With divine intervention, the tide begins to turn. Ungodly policies are reversed, churches awaken to their calling, and believers step into societal leadership roles.

**Result:** This ship sails into calmer waters, but only if the crew (believers) continues maintaining the vessel (society) and relying on the Captain (Christ).

My Opinion Based on Scripture:

The church in America holds the key to sustaining righteousness. If we remain faithful, God will raise leaders to drive back spiritual wickedness. However, if we become complacent, forgetting to thank Him, and slip back into sin, judgment will follow. As Psalm 33:12 declares, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord."* To maintain this blessing, we must commit to ongoing prayer, repentance, and obedience.

Conclusion and Call to Action

1. **Pray Persistently**

Like Abraham, Moses, and Esther, commit to fervent intercession for our nation.

2. **Engage Boldly**

Seek opportunities to serve in government, business, or ministry, becoming the hands and feet of Christ.

3. **Thank God Openly**

Dedicate days of prayer and thanksgiving to honor Him for His intervention.

**Final Encouragement:**

Let us not grow weary in well-doing (Galatians 6:9). If we remain faithful in prayer and action, God will continue intervening, and His righteousness will shine like the dawn (Psalm 37:6).

**Closing Prayer:**

*"Lord, we humbly come before You, confessing our sins and seeking Your mercy on our nation. Raise godly leaders to drive back wickedness, and let us never forget to thank You for Your faithfulness. Use us as Your instruments to bring revival and righteousness to our land. In Jesus' name, Amen."*
