Opening Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we gather today to seek understanding and wisdom from Your Word. Open our hearts and minds to Your truth. Guide us as we explore Your promises and their application in our lives and the lives of those who may not yet know You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Introduction:
Good morning, Church. Today, we delve into a profound question: "Do the promises of God apply to unbelievers, and will they work for them?" This topic can stir up various thoughts and emotions, but it is essential to explore it through the lens of scripture and with a heart open to God's truth.
Scripture Reading:
Let's start with two foundational scriptures:
1. **2 Corinthians 1:20** - "For no matter how many promises God has made, they are 'Yes' in Christ. And so through him the 'Amen' is spoken by us to the glory of God."
2. **John 3:16** - "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
1. Understanding God's Promises:
God's numerous promises cover various aspects of life, from provision and protection to Salvation and eternal life. They are given out of His love and faithfulness.
2. The Condition of Faith:
While God's love extends to all humanity, His promises often come with conditions. One of the primary conditions is faith. Hebrews 11:6 states, "And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."
Illustration: Consider a bank that offers loans. The bank's willingness to lend is based on trust and the applicant's creditworthiness. Similarly, God's promises are available, but faith is the 'creditworthiness' that unlocks them.
3. Promises of General Grace:
God's general grace is available to all, believers and unbelievers alike. Matthew 5:45 says, "He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." This shows God's goodness and provision are evident to all.
Illustration: Think of the rain and sunshine that nourish the crops of both the believer and the unbeliever. God's general blessings are evident in the natural world, providing for all.
4. Salvation and Specific Promises:
When it comes to specific promises, particularly those related to Salvation and the abundant life in Christ, faith in Jesus is essential. John 14:6 says, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." These promises require a personal relationship with Jesus.
5. The Impact of an Unbeliever's Faith:
Interestingly, we see instances where unbelievers, through an act of faith, experience God's promises. One example is the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15:21-28. Despite not being a Jew, her faith in Jesus' power to heal her daughter resulted in a miracle.
Illustration: Consider someone who, in desperation, prays to a God they are unsure of, seeking a miracle. If they receive an answer, it can be the beginning of their journey toward faith.
6. God's Desire for All to Believe:
God's ultimate desire is for all to come to a saving knowledge of Him. 2 Peter 3:9 tells us, "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."
Conclusion:
So, do God's promises apply to unbelievers, and will they work for them? In general grace, yes, they experience God's goodness. But the fullness of God's specific promises, especially those related to Salvation and eternal life, requires faith in Jesus Christ. As believers, we live out and share these promises, guiding others to the faith that unlocks their full potential.
Call to Action:
Today, let us recommit ourselves to living out God's promises and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others. If you have not yet placed your faith in Jesus, I invite you to do so today to experience the fullness of His promises.
Closing Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your promises and Your faithfulness. Help us boldly live out our faith and share Your love with others. May those who do not yet believe come to know You and the hope in Christ. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Go in peace, and may the promises of God be evident in your life as you walk in faith and share His love with the world.
