John 16:8-11 (The Message Bible),
“When He comes (The Holy Spirit), He’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of Sin, Righteousness, and Judgment: He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in Me is their basic sin; that Righteousness comes from above, where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control; that judgment takes place as the ruler of this godless world is brought to trial and convicted.
This speaks of Jesus' farewell discourse to his disciples before his crucifixion and resurrection. In this verse, Jesus is speaking about the role of the Holy Spirit, also known as the Paraclete or Comforter, who will come after Jesus' departure.
The original Greek text of John 16:8 is as follows:
"καὶ ἐλθὼν ἐκεῖνος ἐλέγξει τὸν κόσμον περὶ ἁμαρτίας καὶ περὶ δικαιοσύνης καὶ περὶ κρίσεως"
A direct, literal translation to English reads:
"And when that one comes, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment."
In this verse, Jesus is explaining that when the Holy Spirit comes, He will have the role of convicting or exposing the World's Sin, guiding people toward righteousness, and demonstrating the judgment that awaits those who do not believe in Jesus Christ. This verse highlights the Holy Spirit's role in the lives of Believers and the world as a whole, working to bring about Spiritual transformation and leading people to understand the truth of Jesus' teachings.
