The Principle of Forgiveness.

Forgiveness is an essential aspect of human relationships that can sometimes be difficult to understand or practice. However, it is a principle that can be learned and practiced, even at a young age. Forgiveness is about letting go of resentment and anger towards someone who has wronged you and chose to show love and grace instead.

Understanding that "forgiveness does not come naturally" to everyone is essential. It is an act of obedience to the Lord, as the Bible instructs us in Luke 17:3-10, Ephesians 4:32, and Colossians 3:13. Jesus Himself set an example of forgiveness when He forgave those who crucified Him, as we see in Luke 23:39-43.

Forgiveness is not about giving someone what they deserve but what they need. Psalm 103:10 and Romans 5:8 teach us that we all fall short of God's perfect standard, and it is only by His grace that we can be forgiven and have a restored relationship with Him. Similarly, forgiveness is an act of grace we can extend to others, even when they don't deserve it.

Forgiveness is the love of Jesus Christ in action and involves several promises:

First, we are not to record wrongs suffered, as instructed in I Corinthians 13:5.

Second, we are not to gossip about a person's sins to others, as Ephesians 4:29 teaches us.

Third, we should not dwell on the offense ourselves, as Philippians 4:8 tells us to focus on things that are true, noble, and good.

Finally, as far as is biblically possible, we should seek to restore fellowship with the forgiven person or offender, as Romans 12:18 and II Corinthians 2:6-8 instruct us.

In summary, forgiveness is an act of obedience to God that involves letting go of resentment and anger towards someone who has wronged us. Forgiveness is about giving people what they need rather than what they deserve and is rooted in the love of Jesus Christ. It involves promises of not keeping a record of wrongs, not gossiping, not dwelling on the offense, and seeking to restore fellowship. By choosing forgiveness, we can experience freedom, healing, and true peace in our relationships. So, let us practice forgiveness and let the love of Christ shine through our lives.
